The tendency for the DIY decking builder is to lay the decking boards parallel to the building, because it is the simplest and most cost effective method. However, with a little bit of planning you can pattern your decking boards to create a most effecting and attractive design.
Your decking boards are easy to cut and shape with the right tools, and if you have a good design, they are easy to lay. Read more about this, and learn exactly how to do it, in our excellent Garden Decking eBook.

The top picture on the left shows a deck with 8 sides. The decking boards are partly laid and you can see how the supporting beams below are built.
The decking boards are laid from the outside towards the centre. Never start laying your decking boards from the centre.
The joins on the decking boards are all carefully mitred to provide an exact fit. This is not only safer, and maintenance free, but also it looks much better.
Notice how the edging boards overlap the supporting uprights.
With a normal, small garden deck it is quite in order to lay the decking boards parallel to a building.
These decking boards are ridged and they overlap the supporting edges by a good margin to create a better finish. It also allows rainwater to run off the decking and protect the upright panels.
When you design and build a circular deck, you have a whole new set of problems to overcome when you lay the decking boards.
This is fully explained in our decking eBook, but you can see from the photograph on the left that the decking boards are mitred to create better, safer joins.
When you have irregular shaped decking, perhaps on different levels, you can become really creative when you lay the boards.
